I was having a bit of a board storm with my boss at NCDV the other day about our mission statement, which is to make domestic abuse socially unacceptable. I have always preferred this to those that say they want to end domestic abuse because I just don’t think that is realistic. My boss asked me why I don’t think domestic abuse can be eradicated/ended/stopped? I found I didn’t really know how to answer him! And I have been thinking about it ever since. So I thought it may be useful help me if I did a little board storm of my own on here! What shall we start with? I am sure we all have loads of different theories on this?
Absolutely love that you want to make it socially unacceptable. And, as a survivor, slowly talking to others who also start to open up about their own DA experiences, I almost cry how many are left, years later, still blaming themselves, not understanding what or why its happened to them. The Red flags are something that would be great to have as a visual for our young people too.
We cannot eradicate people who fundamentally live on their own planet of thinking, so DA, like slavery, will never be stopped, but the more of us who say No to it, the less impact and spread it can have...
Well said Sharon. Ever the voice of wisdom and why NLS believes in the project that is Educate a Generation. We need to do more, we need to keep educating and we need change across the whole of society and we need proper understanding of who a perpetrator is.. which is my new published article (will send it to you if you want to read it). Maybe there’s another angle for the dynamic duo?! Xx
